MANUSCRIPT EVALUATION

Looking for an analysis of your novel? Wondering if your manuscript is ready for publication?

A manuscript evaluation includes what's working, what's not working, and how future readers may view your work.

First, I provide more objective feedback on the manuscript as a whole: notes on pacing, character arcs, plot holes, dialogue, setting, etc. I type some comments throughout the manuscript in the margins as I'm reading and then summarize my findings in a double-spaced 6 to 8 page editorial letter.

Second, I provide my reactions as a reader: parts that were confusing, where I would have liked more information on a character's backstory, my reactions to cliffhangers, etc. That can be helpful because it provides insight into what future readers might think of your work.

I offer this service for novels of most genres, but not for nonfiction, children’s books, middle grade, or poetry.

YOUR INVESTMENT: 1.5 cents per word

COPYEDITING

Once your manuscript is complete, it’s time to polish your writing.

With this package, your piece will undergo a thorough copyedit. I’ll fix spelling, grammar, punctuation, tense, subject/verb agreement, etc.

You'll receive your edited manuscript in Microsoft Word with track changes turned on.

YOUR INVESTMENT: 2-2.9 cents per word (depending on the scope of the project)

I was impressed by your thorough understanding of the story. You obviously spent quality time reading and understanding the text, and your observations were spot on. It was clear you understood my characters and their motivations, and that was super important. You managed to point out problem spots in constructive ways, and I feel encouraged to make the needed changes. I am totally satisfied with your work, and would (and will) recommend you to anyone who needs a top-notch editor. My heartfelt thanks.
— Mark Thomas, Kestrel Creed and the Febrile Felon

Working with Katie was a great experience. I loved her suggestions when there were multiple interpretations of what I might be trying to get across. I’ll definitely work with her again. Thanks for a great job!
— Julie Mee, Parabond

My biggest struggle was that I didn’t know how to make my characters more relatable or what plot holes my manuscript had. You were very knowledgeable, prompt and respectful in your critique. I will continue to use you for all and any future books I write!
— -Leslie Cardix, The Last Remaining Rose

Your ability to handle something as important (and personal) as a manuscript, while still providing apt, thoughtful and timely feedback is unmatched. I felt like you really understood my vision for my story and your comments and suggestions insightfully reflected that. Thank you for all the work you did on my manuscript, query letter and synopsis!
— Megan Gilbert, fantasy author

My biggest struggle was stepping away from the manuscript, and seeing new angles and directions to expand the story. I felt like I had hit a creative wall, and you helped me break through that. You were objective, insightful, cheerful about collaborating, always happy and quick to respond. You were very open and transparent about the entire process, and what to expect. Looking forward to reaching out again for future works!
— Matthew Sawczyn, Miss Claus

Katie was incredibly patient and supportive of someone who was terrified to let someone else read my work... The fact that Katie was very timely with her deadlines and kept me informed was really great as well. The little notes of encouragement she placed in the manuscript eval were really nice and gave me a lot of confidence. It really was a joy getting to work with Katie and she helped make a dream that has been in the works for over fourteen years into a reality. If you work with her, you won’t be disappointed.
— Kristen Long, Thief of Sorrows

Your insight of problematic structure helped target the awkward and abrasive areas of my storyline. I felt you really cared about making my story stronger and helping me become a better writer.
— Halley Newhouse, The Dark Side of the Sun
